Families spend time decorating their houses in elaborate horror themes, kids and adults dress up in innovative Halloween costumes and go trick or treating. All in all it’s like one big creepy party. It’s the one day of the year we willingly bring horror into our lives and enjoy it while it lasts.

At work, in the project management sphere, the scene is quite the opposite; horrors are an unwelcome guest. Organizations literally spend every minute of the day doing everything to avoid the horrors of a project gone wrong. Here are 3 steps organizations can take to prevent project management horrors.

Effective communication

While hierarchies are crucial for effective management, they also create communication roadblocks. The key to effective communication is ensuring a healthy 2 way communication across the hierarchy. Leaders need to communicate the organizational objectives and vision while managers need to ensure that leaders, stakeholders and customers have complete visibility on performance metrics, financials, risks and compliance. Communication also contributes to development of a healthy workplace culture. 

Technology enablement & adoption

Technology is a key enabler when it comes to staying in control of various aspects of the project life cycle. Be it planning, resource management, collaboration, budget management or portfolio management, project management tools ensure a seamless flow of information and automate the processes to a large extent. According to a survey by Information week, 77% of companies use project management software, and 87% of high-performing companies use project management software. Time spent by organizations on choosing the right project management system is well worth it, because that could make a world of a difference in adoption & compliance. Risk Management

Projects come with their share of uncertainties; budget overruns, scheduling issues, resource capacity, productivity, technical problems, quality lapses, they come in all shapes and forms. Risk management today is one of most important skills needed by a project manager. They need to have the ability to pre-empt risk situations, get the right stakeholders involved at the right time and deploy corrective actions in time.

There is no limit to the amount of things that could go wrong in a project management scenario. The real horror lies, not in the situation itself but in the inability to take preventive measures. With the right set of measures, organizations can ensure horrors are just limited to costume parties.
