5 Ways To Create Self-sufficient Teams

There is no doubt that a self-sufficient team is the pillar of a successful project. Moreover, for it to flourish, the workplace should be driven by trust and mutual respect. In such optimized environment, both the project manager and team members can work together hand-in-hand to deliver the best possible output. However, often, a workplace is less than ideal, where obstacles emerge, and problems occur. A project manager, thus, should influence the ambiance to make it conducive for optimal productivity. A good way to do so is by creating a safe and positive environment for mistakes and experiments to occur while also being responsible and accountable. There are five ways to do so.

First: Every task should be delegated to a team member who is suitable for it

“The right person for the right task” is not merely an adage. Suitability and familiarity are key to being happy in a job. While everything can be learned, a suitable task would speed up the learning process, thus making the whole process more pleasant and productive. When every team member is happy doing their tasks because they’re either experienced or talented, you can expect the ambiance would be fun and positive.

Second: Encourage every team member to work peacefully without being micromanaged

A good project manager trusts team members that they are capable of doing their tasks well. While feedback is encouraged, refrain from criticizing every step of the way. Reserve the feedback session when a milestone has been reached. Meet every member face-to-face in a one-on-one meeting when providing feedback, to ensure them feeling respected. Moreover, remember not to criticize negatively. Instead, remind team members that every mistake is a learning experience. This way, every team member would feel trustworthy, and the pleasant ambiance would remain.

Third: Be clear about responsibility and accountability

Clarity and transparency should be enforced in the team at all times. This way, the project manager and team members would be able to track every task and activity with better understanding, including whenever a change is required. In a team where every member is aware of their responsibility and accountability, trust can grow even further.

Fourth: Every team member has been granted authority to prove themselves

When a team member is granted authority to make task-related decisions, they would feel respected with a stronger sense of ownership. Since autonomy is a high form of trust, they would likely to reciprocate to those around them, which would result in a team ambiance that is positive, pleasant, and highly productive.

Fifth: Engage team members with each other so mutual trust and respect would grow

Getting team members engaged in a project and with each other requires a project manager’s effort in various activities, where they can be inspired and motivated. Building teamwork and trust among team members through outbound activities, for instance, is one way to deepen the existing work relationship.

In conclusion, trust your team members wholeheartedly. Allow mistakes to occur and experiments to be performed, as they are valuable learning experiences. When trust flourishes naturally in a team, the whole workplace would become positive, pleasant, and productive, which would result in high-quality deliverables.
