MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It’s an open standard, released by Anthropic in late 2024, that lets AI assistants connect securely to the software where your work lives. In project management, it lets the AI tool your company already uses read live project data and, when you allow it, act on it.

Here’s the difference in practice. Without MCP, a project director exports a report and pastes it into an AI chat to get a summary. With MCP, they ask one question and get an answer built from live data, with no export and no copy-paste.

Every MCP setup has these three parts. AI access is one of the project management trends 2026 that is clearly here to stay. But an MCP server alone doesn’t make a tool useful. What the server can reach decides that.

1. Celoxis

Best for: enterprises that need AI access to portfolio, resource, and financial data, not just tasks.

Overview. Celoxis project management software is built for enterprise project management. It combines portfolio visibility, built-in resource capacity planning software, time and expense tracking, and cost reporting in one platform. MCP capabilities. Celoxis MCP is Celoxis’s own MCP server, currently in beta. The AI works as you: it follows the same permissions as your Celoxis account and can only see the projects, tasks, and data you’re authorized to view. Celoxis MCP works alongside Celoxis AI Chat, the assistant built into Celoxis, rather than replacing it. It’s also separate from the Celoxis REST API, which is designed for integrations and automation tools.

Supported AI tools. ChatGPT Desktop, Claude Desktop, and Cursor. Celoxis MCP works only in supported paid desktop apps, not in the browser versions of ChatGPT or Claude.

Setup. Setup takes a few minutes and works for both SaaS and on-premises Celoxis:

1. Find your MCP URL by adding /psa/mcp to the address you use for Celoxis, for example (https://celoxis.mycompany.com/psa/mcp).
2. Generate an access token from your profile menu under API, on the same Celoxis instance.
3. Add Celoxis as a remote MCP server in your desktop app, with the token in the Authorization header.
4. Restart the app and ask “Who am I in Celoxis?” to confirm the connection.

ChatGPT Desktop and Cursor connect directly. Claude Desktop needs Node.js, because it connects through npx and mcp-remote. On-premises teams also need each user’s computer to reach the MCP URL through the network, VPN, firewall, and SSL certificates.

Token security. Each user generates their own token, up to five per user, and Celoxis shows the full token only once. Tokens should never be shared by email, chat, or screenshot, and a lost or compromised token should be deleted and replaced.

Other AI tools through Zapier. If your team uses an AI tool outside that desktop list, Celoxis actions are also available on Zapier MCP. You generate a secure MCP URL, choose which Celoxis actions the AI can use, and connect it to any MCP-compatible tool, or use Zapier Agents for a no-code setup.

This route runs on Zapier’s hosted server and Celoxis’s API-based Zapier integration, so it’s a separate path from Celoxis MCP. The AI can only use the actions you enable in Zapier. Try it in any AI platform.

Overview. Asana is a work management platform known for goals, portfolios, timelines, and clear task ownership. It’s one of the most widely used project management collaboration tools for teams that need marketing, operations, and product to work from the same plan.

MCP capabilities. Asana runs an official, vendor-hosted MCP server, and it has dedicated apps for both Claude and ChatGPT. Through the ChatGPT app, users can:

3. Jira (Atlassian Rovo MCP Server)

Best for: engineering and product teams already running on Atlassian Cloud.

Overview. Jira is the default issue tracker for many software teams, and Atlassian’s MCP server covers far more than Jira alone. The official Rovo MCP server connects AI tools to Jira, Confluence, Compass, Jira Service Management, and Bitbucket. It moved from public beta to general availability in February 2026, and Atlassian reports more than a million users working through it every month.

MCP capabilities. The server supports real read and write work across Atlassian products:

Setup. Most AI clients list the Rovo server in their connector gallery. Authentication uses OAuth 2.1, and admins can optionally enable API token access. One detail to plan for: the first user to complete the OAuth flow installs the server for your site, and their permissions shape the scope available to others.

Supported AI tools. Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, Codex, and other MCP-compatible clients.

4. Smartsheet

Best for: spreadsheet-native PMOs that want AI answers without building new reports.

Overview. Smartsheet combines a familiar spreadsheet interface with project, workflow, and reporting features. Its MCP server became generally available on March 24, 2026, and it’s one of the most complete launches on this list. (Smartsheet announcement)

MCP capabilities. The server exposes read and write access to Sheets, Rows, Columns, Discussions, Comments, and Workspaces, with dozens of tools at launch. In practice, the AI can:

• Pull row relationships, column types, cell history, and comments for rich context
• Update task status and dates
• Add or modify columns
• Manage risks and create new assets from your Smartsheet data
